Introductory Cardinality Theory

چکیده

The initial definition of finiteness says no more than a set is finite if we can “count” its elements. Counting means establishing a one-to-one correspondence with a set of consecutive integers beginning with one. Thus, if f is a function mapping {1,2,..., } n oneto-one onto a set A, we “count” A as (1), (2),..., ( ) f f f n . The fact that f is one-to-one and onto ensures that each element of A is counted (onto-ness) and that no element is counted more than once (one-to-one-ness).

Basic Counting

One way to formally introduce counting principles is through countable sets, the cardinality of these sets, operations among sets, mappings between these sets and formal power series. We follow a high-level approach (also adopted in most introductory textbooks in Discrete Mathematics) as long it is well understood how we can technically formalize the arguments. Working from basic principles and...

Disciplinary Acculturation: A Comparative Study of Intradiscourse Cycles of English and Persian Introductory Textbooks of Sociology and Linguistics

The present study aimed at investigating the specific discourse cycles of someintroductory textbooks across disciplines and languages to see to what extent theyacculturate students into the new subjects. To this end, 2 well-established and mostlyused English and Persian introductory textbooks in sociology and 2 other wellestablishedEnglish and Persian introductory textbooks in linguistics were ...

Is Just War Theory Obsolete?

Just War Theory can be found in almost all major cultures. But since war was a business that could not be easily stopped, some aimed to constrain it. In its classic form, Just War Theory has been around for several centuries—ever since nationhood in Europe replaced provincial governments. Having made some introductory considerations, I will ask: should Just War Theory be left as it is, changed,...

What is Uni cation ? A Categorical View of Substitution , Equation and Solution

From a general perspective, a substitution is a transformation from one space to another, an equation is a pair of such substitutions, and a solution to an equation is a substitution that yields the same value when composed with (i.e., when substituted into) the substitutions that constitute the given equation. In some special cases, solutions are called uniiers. Other examples include Scott do...

On the representation of cardinalities of interval-valued fuzzy sets: The valuation property

In our earlier work we have developed the axiomatic theory of the scalar cardinality of interval-valued fuzzy sets following Wygralak’s axiomatic theory of scalar cardinalities of fuzzy sets. The cardinality has been defined as a mapping from the set of interval-valued fuzzy sets with finite support to the set of closed subintervals of [0,+∞). We have shown that each scalar cardinality of inter...
